Sir Eion Edgar
Sir Eion lives in Queenstown, New Zeland and has a strong background in investment, education, the arts, sport and philanthropy. Eion undertakes all activities with a balanced and tuned vigour, culminating in success in all fields.
His working career has concentrated in the finance and investment area both in roles as Chairman and largest shareholder of Forsyth Barr Group (one of the country’s leading independent investment houses) and other private investment activities. Current and past Board roles include Chairman of the NZ Stock Exchange, Director of Vero Insurance, ACC Director and Investment Committee Chair, Director of the Reserve Bank of NZ, and Chairman of Trustees of the Central Lakes Trust.
Community involvement and leadership includes Patron of the Wakatipu Trails Trust and ShelterBox NZ, Immediate Past President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, a Trustee of the Halberg Trust, NZ Football Foundation and the Skeggs Foundation. He recently retired as a Foundation Trustee of the Arts Foundation of NZ. Eion retired as Chancellor of the University of Otago in December 2003. He was the cornerstone funder of the University of Otago Edgar Centre for Diabetes and Obesity Research and the Edgar Olympic Foundation.
Eion’s achievements have been recognised by the community and his peers with numerous awards including; 2004 NBR New Zealander of the Year, inductee of the Business Hall of Fame, 2010 Senior New Zealander of the Year and in 2009 received a Knighthood for services to business and the community.
